Tobacco is one of the most addictive drugs worldwide. Nicotine is the key tobacco ingredient that is the basis for forming an addiction to the drug. Why is this you might ask?  Medical research has proven that nicotine activates sections of the brain that is directly connected to feeling pleasure.  Upon inhaling cigarette smoke, it takes approximately ten seconds for drug levels to peak.  Unbelievably, smokeless tobacco users and pipe smokers absorb nicotine slower than cigarette smokers.  To keep the pleasurable feeling, smokers must take more puffs off of cigarettes.

  1. Being exposed to secondhand smoke in the home can prove harmful for children with slowing down lung growth.  Older children have been found to suffer from pneumonia and bronchitis that are exposed to secondhand smoke in the home.
  2. Smoking and being exposed to secondhand smoke can lead to lung cancer and heart disease. One can obtain both these conditions as a nonsmoker, but smoking cigarettes increases the risk.
  3. Secondhand smoke can cause SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), chronic ear infections, Asthma and upper respiratory problems.
  4. Children subjected to secondhand smoke can often experience coughing and wheezing.

Cigarette Smoke decreases Enzyme Levels in the Human Body

MAO B is a pivotal enzyme that can be detected through Position Emission Tomography (PET).  This enzyme is found within internal organs.  MAO B plays avital role in nerve cell communication and blood pressure.  One who is a non-smoker will exhibit normal enzyme levels with smokers presenting a lower concentration of enzymes.  It has been viewed that sometimes, MAO B is not found in some major organs of smokers.

How to Protect Others and Yourself

You must protect yourself and your loved ones from secondhand smoke.  The one sure way to accomplish this task is to avoid environments that allow smoking.  Your goal should always be to visit or work in smoke-free environments.  If this is not possible, sit outside of a smoking area, or move as far away as possible.  Open a window; turn on a fan or air conditioning.  If one is a smoker, their loved ones should never be exposed their loved ones to cigarettes because of the harmful toxins found in the product.  The only sure way to protect ones family and loved ones from secondhand smoke is to quit smoking.

The majority of smokers do not realize that quitting smoking contains immediate health benefits.  When one quits smoking (stop smoking altogether) within a twenty-four hour period, one’s blood pressure decreases.  The risk of heart attacks drop.  If one remains faithful to the course of remaining smoke-free, the risk of various cancers, to include lung cancer is decreased.  Risk of heart disease is decreased, as well.
